The Experimental Lakes Area is located on the Precambrian Shield of northwestern Ontario, approximately 50 km east-southeast of Kenora, ON. The vegetation is predominately boreal forest dominated by black spruce and jack pine, interspersed with small lakes. The ELA is 27,000 ha in size and includes 58 small lakes (1 to 84 ha in area) and their drainage basins. The area have been set aside for long-term monitoring and research into natural ecosystems. Only research activities, or activities compatible with that research, are permitted within or adjacent to these watersheds. |
