Observation
Category : Air sampling observation
Situation : October 2000
Time zone : UTC

Sampling
Sampling height :
Description : flask
Sampling and analysis frequency : Sampling during 8 voyages across the Pacific Ocean between 1996 and 2000 (usually 2 yoyages each year). Samples were taken at approximately every 2 degrees of latitude.
Sampling environment :
Description for sampling analysis : Air samples of ~ 1 m3 STP were collected using a three-stage oil free compressor (RIX, Industries, Oakland, California). Samples were stored in high-pressure aluminium cylinders (Scott Specialty Gases, San Francisco, California). Some additional glass flask samples were also taken.

Instrument and Analysis
Measurement method : Gas Chromatography (FID)
Current status and history of instrument : GC system was based on a Varian 2740-20, with a two stage
cryogenic trapping and transfer system, similar to that described
for light hydrocarbon analysis by Greenberg et al. (1994). This system had a 0.08" i.d. 20 ft phenyl isocynate Porasil C column with 7 ml/min helium carrier used isothermally at 50C which provided good separation for C2 to C5.
